Chapter 22

Parrish showered and dressed. He looked with suspicion at the bed with the rather worn brown polyester bedspread where he had laid out his clothes for dinner. Naara had reserved rooms in a shabby hotel near the airport. Not like her at all. What’s up with this? Usually it was only the best for Naara. Why in the world would she ever book rooms at a place like this. He shook his head while he walked to the cheap, flimsy desk and picked up his cell to call Livy.

“Parrish,” Livy said, her voice raised with excitement. “Are you here? I’m almost ready. We’re still on for supper with your aunt, right?”

Parrish hesitated for a couple breaths before speaking. “Of course. I wouldn’t have asked you if I planned to back out. I just hope you’re ready for this.”

“I’ll be fine. I’m more worried about you. The last couple times I brought up meeting your family, you were pretty emphatic about that not happening.”

“Well, I suppose it had to happen at some point. Since Naara invited herself on this trip, I guess we can start with her. Just remember, for now, don’t tell her who your father is.”

“Sooner or later, your family’s going to find out you’ve been dating Aurelius Hunt’s daughter. The paparazzi will see to that. I don’t understand why you are making such a big deal of it. He’s just my father; he’s not some kind of ogre because he’s rich. Your family isn’t exactly poor either.”

“I know. It’s just …” Parrish sighed. “I promise I’ll explain it to you. Just not tonight, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah. I know. This deep, dark family secret. I’ll let it go for now, Parrish. But you have to promise me that you’ll tell me everything … soon. We’ve been together two years now. It’s time we took the next step. Unless … you don’t want to.”

“You know I want to, Livy. I love you. It’s just complicated. Please be patient with me?”

“I love you too.” She grumbled meaningless growls, but then said, “Meet me outside my apartment in twenty?”

“Sure. At least as long as Naara is ready.”

“Text me if it’s going to be longer. Otherwise, I’ll see you soon. Love ya. Bye”

“Bye.”

Twenty-five minutes later, Parrish pulled up to the curb in front of the mansion that had recently been turned into luxury apartments. Four hundred Northrup Avenue had been one of Aurelius Hunt’s private residences. But once Olivia chose to pursue her degree at the university in Camden, he had renovated the property. It now boasted three huge apartments; one was Olivia’s, the other two were rented by select employees of the university.

Parrish had refused to take Livy out in the rental van and ignoring Naara’s protests, had rented a series 7 BMW for the next week. The engine of the powerful BMW purred as the passenger door opened.

“Oh.” Livy’s eyes went wide as she took a step back. “I guess I’ll ride in the back.”

“Sorry,” Parrish grunted. “Thanks.

Despite Parrish’s fears for the evening, the meal went well.
